Looking to push your science students beyond recall and into real analysis? This engaging case study, focused on Chemical Mixtures, puts students in the middle of a real-world scenario where they must interpret data, weigh evidence, and defend a decision. A perfect way to apply the concepts you've already taught and see what students truly understand!
Each Scientific Case Study comes with:
✔ A real-world scenario built around authentic science.
✔ Student-facing data sets, graphs, and primary sources to analyze.
✔ Scaffolded analysis questions that build toward a Claim-Evidence-Reasoning decision.
✔ Digital Google Slides and Printable PDF Versions.
✔ A complete Answer Key.
✔ Teacher Notes - what to look for, common misconceptions, and additional resources.
What will the students be doing?
- Students will be given either a printed or digital copy of the case study.
- First, students read the scenario and identify the question or problem at the center of the case.
- Next, students analyze the included data - graphs, tables, images, and primary sources.
- Students then work through the scaffolded analysis questions individually or in pairs.
- Finally, students make a decision and defend it using Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning.
- Bring students back together to compare claims, challenge reasoning, and clear up misconceptions!
What materials are needed?
- Either 1 printed copy per student OR the digital version assigned
- Pencil or pen
- Students in groups/pairs for the discussion and C.E.R. portions
- No lab equipment or prep required - everything students need is included
When should I use this resource in my class?
✔ When studying chemistry or science in general
✔ Perfect review resource or extension activity
✔ This makes for the perfect homework or individual activity
✔ When looking to link outside world into your classroom
✔ This makes for the perfect sub activity too!
✔ Wanting to tie in literacy or research into your lessons?
✔ Anytime you want to get students excited about science!
➡ Please note that this activity assumes students HAVE been introduced to the unit's terminology and concepts. Case Studies are designed as an application and reinforcement resource, not a sole source of teaching. For the best results, use these after core instruction to transfer learning to a real-world context.

Where did this resource come from?
Our own classrooms! Within science, connecting concepts beyond the classroom is often a subject that generates a lot of interest but can be difficult to do. We've found that exploring the real world around us really helps to solidify student understanding; hence Sciesmic was born!
