Natural disasters dominate news cycles and capture student attention but, that attention often comes with anxiety rather than understanding. Students need more than lists of disaster types; they need frameworks for understanding why, where, and when these events become dangerous.

Our video "Natural Disasters: Understanding Earth's Hazards" provides that framework. Students discover:
✅ The crucial distinction: Natural hazards are normal Earth processes (volcanoes, earthquakes, storms). Natural disasters occur when these processes impact human populations. This single concept transforms how students think about Earth's dynamic systems.
✅ Three key risk factors: Hazard intensity, population exposure, and vulnerability. Understanding these factors helps students analyze why similar events cause vastly different impacts in different locations—why a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastates one region but causes minimal damage in another.
✅ Multiple hazard categories with specific mechanisms: Geological hazards (earthquakes from tectonic stress release, volcanoes showing warning signs, tsunamis from underwater earthquakes), atmospheric hazards (hurricanes forming over warm oceans, tornadoes from severe thunderstorms), hydrologic hazards (river floods, coastal flooding, flash floods), plus wildfires and sinkholes.
✅ Predictability differences: Why hurricanes can be tracked days in advance while earthquakes strike without warning, and why this matters for emergency response.
